Chalk One up for Texas Girls Hockey with Dru Burns Going Div-1 at Boston College…

Dru_burns_bc-1_small

Congratulations to Dru Burns (1991) who just signed a National Letter of Intent to play hockey with the Eagles of Boston College beginning in the 2009-2010 season.

Dru is currently a senior at Shattuck Saint Mary’s (SSM) in Faribault, Minnesota, where she is a defenseman on their Girls Prep (19U) team, which is 24-4-2 thus far in the 2008-09 season. Dru was a member of the inaugural Alliance Squirt A team during the 2001-2002 season, and played for Alliance for 5 seasons, her last being with the 2005-2006 14U Bantam AAA Tier I squad.  She then went on to play all-girls hockey full time in 2006-2007, when she was a member of the SSM Prep (19U) team that went 54-2-1 and won it’s 3rd consecutive USA Hockey 19U National Championship.

Due to her success on the ice and in the classroom, Dru was afforded many choices to consider when making her decision of where to go to college and play hockey, and chose Boston College because of their strong academic heritage and her desire to be challenged academically as well as athletically.  An annual regular at the USA Hockey National Select Festivals, Dru has experienced many accomplishments on the ice and off during her career.

Congratulations to Dru, her family, and especially to her proud parents Christine and David.

Go Eagles!

"1990 Texas rookie Tyler Myers makes it BIG in NHL with Buffalo Sabres"

Sabres decide to keep Myers around

Thursday, 10.29.2009 / 10:45 AM / NHL Insider
By Mike G. Morreale  - NHL.com Staff Writer

"He's certainly shown that he'll play in the NHL and be a good player in the NHL. The real questions that revolve around young players, by the very nature of their youth, you have to accept a level of inconsistency in their play. Part of the process here is we have to evaluate what that range is, and whether or not we can support the range and have him grow and have the team grow, have the team win."
-- Darcy Regier on Tyler Myers

NEWARK, N.J. -- The clock has struck midnight for Buffalo Sabres' defenseman Tyler Myers.

And after an extremely impressive nine-game tryout for coach Lindy Ruff, the towering rookie can breathe a sigh of relief -- he's made it.

Sabres General Manager Darcy Regier made the announcement on Thursday morning -- following his team's 4-1 triumph over the New Jersey Devils Wednesday -- that Myers would remain with the team for the foreseeable future. As a 19-year-old with junior eligibility left, Myers is not able to be assigned to the team's AHL affiliate in Portland.

As a result, Myers' three-year entry level contract he signed last May will kick in with the start of Buffalo's 10th game of the season on Friday against the Toronto Maple Leafs.

"It's been very exciting and all the guys have made it very comfortable for me," Myers told NHL.com. "I'm very fortunate for that."

It was pretty obvious that Myers' teammates in Buffalo preferred that he remain with the club.

"He's been amazing," Sabres forward Jason Pominville told NHL.com. "For a guy his size (6-foot-8) and his age, the composure, skating ability and shot he possesses are tremendous. He's really good with the puck too. I think he's been even more than what everyone expected and he definitely has a bright career ahead of him.

"He's done his part to make (management's) decision difficult as to whether or not they should send him down or keep him."

USA Hockey Announces H1N1 Recommendations

COLORADO SPRINGS, Colo. - USA Hockey, with the counsel of Dr. Michael Stuart, its chief medical officer, today issued the following information regarding the H1N1 infection, including recommendations to reduce the likelihood of spreading the infection.

USA Hockey recommends:

- Providing individual water bottles for players and not sharing water bottles.
- Regularly washing hands.
- Cleaning workout gear for each practice/competition.
- Keeping gloves on during the traditional handshake with opponents.

Individuals with influenza may develop typical signs or symptoms, including: fever (102 degrees fahrenheit or greater), cough, muscle aches, runny nose, headache or sore threat, with the potential for more serious complications, including pneumonia.

This year's influenza virus strain has particularly affected children and young adults. Transmission of the influenza virus may occur from the day before the onset of symptoms and during the five-to-seven days that the symptoms are present.

Infected individuals should stay home until signs and symptoms have resolved, with no fever present for at least 24 hours. The 24-hour no-fever timeline should be achieved naturally, without the aid of fever reducing medications.

Additional information regarding H1N1 is available from the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention.
